Communicating With Lots of People

As an estate agent, you will be dealing with a variety of different people on a daily basis and you need to be comfortable communicating with others. Having great people skills is crucial to being a successful estate agent and you need to enjoy interacting with others, as it will be a big part of your role. You will be speaking with potential tenants and buyers, sellers, landlords, property managers, as well as other professionals in the industry.

Having good communication skills is essential to being able to properly communicate with others and ideally, you need to be a confident and well-spoken person too. If you’re someone that enjoys a job where you constantly get to speak to and meet new people, then a role as an estate agent could be well suited to you.

Managing Multiple Tasks at Once

Another thing that you will need to be good at when working as an estate agent is managing multiple tasks at once and balancing a busy workload. Often as an estate agent, you might have viewings to attend, calls to make, meetings with landlords and contracts to send out, all on the same day. You need to have the skills to manage all of these tasks and prioritise your workload, not to mention stay calm in busy and stressful situations.

As an estate agent, you will have several responsibilities and every working day will be different, so this is something you should consider. If you are good at handling a busy and varied workload, and you’re someone who is organised and able to juggle lots of tasks at the same time, then a career as an estate agent could potentially be a good fit for you.

Sales and Negotiation Skills

When working as an estate agent, you need to have good sales skills and you should be comfortable putting them into action with people. Whether you work in sales or lettings, there is an aspect of sales in your role and you will need to essentially sell a property to a buyer or tenant. You will need to be able to match people to suitable properties too and convince them why this is the perfect place for them to live.

Successful estate agents also need to have strong negotiation skills and the ability to be proactive with the sales process, keeping on top of everything. Having good maths skills can also be beneficial as you will be dealing with numbers whether you work in lettings or sales. If you’re someone who has good sales and negotiation skills, and will be motivated to sell and let houses then a career as an estate agent might be for you.

Passion for the Property Industry

Another thing that makes a great estate agent is someone truly passionate about the property industry. This will be evident to your prospective employer as well as to the potential tenants, buyers, sellers and landlords that you’re working with. When you’re passionate about your industry, it will help you to succeed and grow in your role.

Some people start a career simply because they need to pay the bills, but if you start working as an estate agent without any true passion for the industry then you might not enjoy your new role. So if you are someone who is passionate about residential property and the market, then a career as an estate agent could be the perfect fit for you.
