The first day at any new job is always filled with nerves and anxiety. It is your only chance to make a good first impression, which will impact the progress of your long-term success in the company. While a bad first impression won't completely ruin your career or even your career within one company, it will be much harder work to build your profile.

To avoid this sort of start, you should properly prepare for your first day in a new job, ensuring you have the opportunity to start off on the right foot. Here at Pear Recruitment, we’re committed to making sure that you are fully prepared for that first day of your new job. As a recruitment company, we believe that our job doesn’t stop when you’ve been given the job offer, we believe that our job is finished once you’ve settled in.

We’ve put together some examples of how to make the most of your first day in your new role.

  • Research

We know that you have done a lot of research during your application process and whilst interviewing for the role, but there is always more research to do. Make sure that you check out social media posts to get a feel of the sort of public-facing image the company creates. You can also research the sort of culture and appropriate attire that the company has. The easiest way to do this is just to email the staff member you've been communicating with.

As an estate agent, you might want to make sure that your research involves looking at the sort of projects the company works with and information about the area. This is particularly important if you're moving into a new location, so check out any important amenities to your work, for example if you're working in domestic property sales, you might want to research local schools, transport links and shops, so you can hit the ground running on your first day.

  • Get in Touch with your Line Manager

Success in a company is often created through having a good relationship with your manager. This is something that you can start working on before the first day at your job. Make sure that you get in contact with them, asking them if there is anything specific you should prepare for your first day or what you might expect from your first week.

This starts to build a good relationship with your new manager and demonstrates that you are a proactive employee that is prepared to make a great first impression. Not only does this raise your standings in the company but it can also help you feel better about your next and more prepared for your first day at work.

  • Confirm your Schedule

You probably have a lot of questions that you would like to ask about things like start times, where your desk is or who your line manager is. Sometimes these details are in the job description but this isn't true of every company that you work with. Taking the time to check is helpful for both you and the management team and can help avoid confusion in the future.

You don’t want to miss important team meetings because you didn’t know your schedule. The best person to speak to you about this is your manager or the HR representative that hired you. Remember, that every company is different and you shouldn’t assume your schedule is based on past experiences with different companies.
