Being asked to come and interview for a job role is both really exciting and incredibly nerve-wracking. Of course, an interview is your chance to convince a company why they should hire you instead of the other candidates they’re meeting and simply put, it will often be make or break as to whether you get the job or not. However, it is also important to remember that interviews work both ways.

An interview is also your opportunity to find out more about a company and the position that you’re interviewing for. So, when an interviewer asks if you have any questions, which they almost always do, it is good to use this to your advantage. Asking questions can make you look enthusiastic and engaged too which is always beneficial. If you’re never really sure what sort of questions you should ask at this point in an interview, below are some general questions that are beneficial to know the answers to.

What are the key responsibilities of the position?

Whilst you can learn a lot about a job from the vacancy advertisement, it is always worthwhile finding out more about what the daily responsibilities are and what an average working day is like. This type of question won’t only help you to decide whether the role is right for you, but it will also give you a better idea of what the employer’s expectations are for this role too.

Where can the role lead to in the future?

Knowing that there is room for progression is really important for lots of candidates, so it is always worthwhile enquiring about the training and development opportunities offered by the company. Not only will this be useful for you to know, but it will also demonstrate that you’re committed to a future with the company and serious about furthering your career.

What is the company culture like?

This is arguably one of the most important questions to ask, after all, you spend so much time at work. Getting an insight into the company culture will help you to discover whether you’d fit in with the other employees and whether you’d enjoy the work environment. Learning more in this regard will also provide information about a company’s priorities, the work-life balance, any work perks and also what the current employee satisfaction rate is.

Who would I be working alongside?

Again, you spend so much time at work, so it is essential that you get on well with the people you will be working closely with and that there is a positive team dynamic. Asking questions about who you’ll be reporting to, who you’ll be working alongside and if you’re going into a senior role, who will be reporting to you can be really useful. You may also want to inquire about how frequently you’ll be collaborating and working on group projects.

Do you have any final questions for me?

As the interview is coming to an end it can be beneficial to ask a question that is along these lines. This provides you with one last opportunity to address any last-minute queries or concerns that the interviewer may have now that you have spoken for some time. It also provides you with one more chance to sell yourself if they do have any questions for you.

What the next step in the process will be?

Another good way to wrap up an interview is to enquire about what the next stages of the interview process will be. You can also directly ask when you will hear back from the company and this is something that many interviewers expect to be asked by candidates. Of course, the answer to this question is really beneficial to know.
